Watch for odd language.
While scams are often local, many come from abroad. Their messages are filled with bad grammar and often have an odd tone. (Consider the fake Nigerian prince email scams so many of us have received.)

Think about your writing style: It’s worth adding that it doesn’t hurt to pay attention to style. I can only speak as a woman receiving messages from men, but anything that addresses me as ‘babe’, ‘sexy’ or ‘hunny’ is an instant turn off. It’s just tacky, like the online version of a drunken bum-pinch in a club. Likewise, emails written in the style of a text-mad teen are also unappealing. Most folk forgive the odd spelling error, typo or grammatical blooper, but if you insist on writing ‘u r gr8 – letz go 4 a drnk’, you’re probably not going to get terribly far. You’re not paying by the character and you have a full QWERTY keyboard–use it!

Once you've thought of all the traits you want in a mate, prioritise them. Think about the characteristics in the context of previous relationships, your friends and your family. Develop a scoring system. Allocate points to your top 10, and fewer points to a second set of 10‑15 characteristics. Decide the lowest number of points you'll accept in order to go out on a date with someone. This is basically developing a handcrafted algorithm, just for yourself.
